Projects
Culturally Relevant Parenting Program
Exploring the feasibility of a culturally relevant parenting program. The main objective of this 3-year pilot project (funded by NIGMS) is to assess whether providing parenting support, with an added emphasis on ethnic-racial socialization and healthy lifestyle behaviors, improves the social-emotional functioning and healthy lifestyle behaviors of Black and Latiné children ages 3-6. We also explore parents’ satisfaction and engagement with the program, with the goal of applying for a larger study to more fully test the intervention’s impact.
Preventive Intervention For Economic Distress
Testing the differential treatment effects of a preventive intervention for families experiencing high levels of economic distress. This R03 project (funded by NIMH) examines whether certain types or combinations of pre-existing risk factors, such as intimate partner violence and job instability, impacted participants’ responses to the family-based intervention.
Dual-Focus Parenting Interventions
A scoping review of parenting interventions with a dual focus on promoting child social-emotional functioning and healthy lifestyle behaviors (e.g., sleep, diet, physical activity). Following PRISMA guidelines for conducing scoping reviews, we will search published literature between 2002-2022 using various online databases (e.g., PubMed, PsychINFO). Results will identify the intervention components used to impact social-emotional and healthy lifestyle behavior, the types of outcomes assessed, the extent to which equity was considered, and identify areas for further study.
